Polo, anyone?

POLO? YES, UMASS AMHERST HAS a polo team, as well as an eventing team. The two fledgling clubs are open to all UMass students and use off-campus facilities at area farms. The polo team works out at Stone Pony Farm in Leverett and is coached by the farm’s manager Hilary Mroz-Blythe, says team captain Erin Risso. The eventing team, where riders compete in three disciplines – dressage, stadium jumping and cross-country – uses the Stoneleigh Burnham School in Greenfield as its home base.

Eventing captain Alyssa Riley, who was also instrumental in starting the polo club last year, says the teams grew out of a core of students who were looking for a way to compete and improve their riding skills but have also attracted novices who “just want to try something new.”
