THANKS MOM & DAD
The UMass soccer teams began the new season on new turf this fall thanks in large part to the generosity of Jinny and Andrew Rudd of Orinda, California, parents of Lexi, a senior defender on the women’s team. The Rudd Family Foundation contributed $500,000 to help complete the nearly $1 million project. Called Rudd Field, the new soccer pitch is adjacent to the softball complex, which opened in April 2001.
On August 30, the men’s team defeated Towson 2-1 in the opening round of the Navy Fall Classic, giving head coach Sam Koch win number 124, the most by any coach in the history of UMass men’s soccer.
GO-RILLAS
We reported on the return of the gorilla mascot at men’s lacrosse games in our spring issue and his presence must have had a positive effect on the team. The Gorillas finished last season with a record of 11-3 and earned a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament before losing to Johns Hopkins by a 13-12 score in a wildly thrilling overtime game in the quarter-final round. Four players received All-America honors, including Matt McFarland, who has won the distinction three times. Coach Greg Cannella was named Eastern College Athletic Conference and All-New England Coach of the Year.
PLAY IT AGAIN
In what sounds like a broken record, the softball team keeps breaking records. A year after establishing a school mark for most consecutive wins, the Minutewomen smashed their own record by winning 33 straight games last spring, the nation’s longest streak of the year by a Division I team and the eighth longest in history. They finished the season with a perfect 21-0 record in A-10 competition and 53-13 overall, earned a fourth seed in the NCAA tournament and set 18 new individual and team records over the year. |
