Set your house in order. Clean up your act.
The campus has recently enjoyed several quality-of-life upgrades: a new order at Butterfield dorm; a planned alcohol-free fraternity; a cleanup of the Campus Pond.
Butterfield, the dorm that saw major vandalism in 2001, was reconstituted with all new students. A year later, it was widely agreed to be a success. After $20,000 worth of damages, the entire building was rehabilitated, and students living there, many of them part of the honors program, were delighted, as are the police and the university’s housing administrators.
This fall, another trouble spot, the former Delta Chi fraternity on Sunset Avenue, has re-emerged as an alcohol-free house run by Omega Delta fraternity. The house, which had been closed for housing and fire-code violations, is smoke-free, with no alcohol allowed in common areas.
Finally, in an act of community responsibility on Earth Day, April 20, about 100 people took part in cleaning up the Campus Pond and the area around it. Accumulated litter ranged from cans and bottles to a university street light. |
