PERSONAL LOSSES
Alumni lost on September 11

From The Collegian, September 12:

“We all know someone who is very close to what happened. We all have someone who is there.”

– SGA president John Sheehan

From an e-mail to Chancellor Williams, September 13:

“I am an alum of the class of ’90. Another alum, Todd Russell Hill ’90, is still lost in NYC at the World Trade Center Mariott Hotel. . . . If you would, please have our campus community remember Todd in its prayers. . . . ”

– Mike Petrocelli ’90 , Arlington

LOGAN IS OUR STATE'S MAJOR airport, New York City our near neighbor. Our university is large, our alumni numerous, and the number of victims of the September 11 attacks calamitous. For all these reasons it was probably inevitable that UMass people would be among the casualties. Six alumni were on the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. At least two more are among the missing, and it is a sad likelihood that more will be identified as obituaries appear for the thousands still lost.

For all of us whose link with each other is our link with this campus, the cost in lives has only begun to be counted. Nor when all the alumni who died in the attacks are memorialized in these pages will we have counted the cost in friends and family, lovers, colleagues, and acquaintances of those formally affiliated with UMass. We cherish the memory of all of them.
